From the 34m-high balcony of watchtower in Rožňava you can admire the whole city and its surroundings. A wonderful sight unfolds before our eyes. The tower was built between 1643-1654 and served an important defensive function at a time when the country was threatened by the Turks. The fact that the tower went through very difficult moments is evidenced by the Turkish cannonball that can still be seen drilled into the wall of the south façade. Near the cannonball there is a Renaissance stone tablet from the time the tower was built with the city’s contemporary coat of arms. The tower clock has been famous for its accuracy.
The 36.5 m high tower, which has undergone several renovations, has played an important role in the protection of the city and has a rich historical past.
From the balcony of the Watchtower you can have a beautiful view of Rožňava, all the monuments of its historical center, the Calvary and the Rožňava valley. Thanks to the tower, Rožňava was named the CITY OF VIEWS.
